Description:

 Casas do Caratão is a house in schist beautifully restored with a guest house also in schist, and an extensive garden, following a stream, in an idyllic valley.

The property is part of a small group of houses in schist in the place of Caratão, which nestles in the sheltered valley of Linhares river. This place has been largely restored and is a picturesque example of a traditional village of schist. Access to the property is via two bridges, one public, and other in wood belonging to the property, which are prepared for vehicles. Exterior stone stairs guide us from one side of the house to the kitchen, which has walls in tiles, wooden ceilings and tiled floors. The entrance to the room is through an archway, and this has the wooden ceiling with exposed beams, and the walls have exposed schist stone. The room has three windows and a door to the outside, which would make an ideal access to a balcony, if built. There is a wood stove in the living room, and the whole house is equipped with central heating. Leaving the room, we have a bathroom with tiled shower. A wooden staircase leads to a bedroom and a office that are under the eaves of the house, and both have windows, floors and wooden ceilings. On the ground floor there is a spacious kitchen with the walls with exposed stone, tiled floor, wooden ceiling, marble countertop, double sink, and pipes for dishwasher. There is also a traditional wood oven. Also on this floor we have a bedroom, with tiled floors and wooden ceilings, window and heating, and a spacious bathroom with tiles and a granite sink. Leaving the small hallway, there is a space for storage of coats and an airy cabinet. The boiler of the central heating is housed under some exterior stairs. At the bottom of the stairs there is a barbecue, and a terrace shadowed by a pergola covered with purple wisteria in spring and Virginia creeper.

The garden area is covered with olive trees, shrubs and flower beds, there are stone steps and a walk on sloping stone in front of the house with another covered pergola. A large grassed area extends with vineyards until the river. In the field there are four wells, and a water tank which automatically fills by providing water to 7 taps. A small hydroelectric scheme was set up and currently provides one third of the electricity in the house. The turbine is housed in the mill beside the river to. There is a garage with brick walls covered with slate, and the ground in concrete, currently used as a workshop, with a covered area for firewood outside. A top floor was installed over the garage for use as storage. Behind the garage, there is a fenced garden for birds with a lake, with several houses of birds, apple, fig and two big chestnuts that provide an incredible shade has also a peaceful place to seat and read or rest listening to the sound of nature.

A path of about 100m brings us to the guest house. Stone steps lead us to a patio with stone floor and barbecue area with a sink. At the front of the house we have a rustic balcony giving wonderful views of the valley. The front door opens into the hallway where we find a bathroom with tiled walls and a wall with the schist rock exposed, wooden ceiling with exposed beams, and marble sink. Passing the hall to the kitchen, which has a tiled floor, oven and hob and a support cabinet, and marble countertops. All the furniture in this house is included in the sale. A spiral staircase connecting the kitchen to a living room upstairs, which has wooden floors and walls lined with wood. The wall has the stone exposed. The living room has fireplace, 2 sofas, table with 6 chairs and a TV. Opening a wooden door to a exterior stairs, we went down to another terrace with stone floors. On this room there are stairs that connect to the 2nd floor where we find a hall with connection to 3 bedrooms all with floors and wooden ceilings. One of the rooms has an L-shaped form and has a bunk bed, a desk and a chair and a window with eaves in stone. The 2nd bedroom has white walls and one with exposed stone, two single beds and a desk and chair, and a window. The third bedroom has a double bed, wardrobe, bedside tables, white walls and a coated wood, and a window. There is also a bathroom with tiled floor and walls, a shower and toilet furniture, marble sink and mirror. This attachment is in a very peaceful and private area, and would be an excellent guest house.
