Quinta do Vale

In wooded green countryside, just an hour away from the historic city of Coimbra, you turn onto a private road of cobbled granite; it’s a very impressive entrance, and it’s just the start. From the moment you drive through the wrought iron gates this property will not disappoint you. Three flawlessly restored buildings and a small ruin, still waiting for the attention it deserves, sit with two swimming pools on 8,090 m2 of land, much of which has been terraced and planted to orchard and grape vines.

The larger of the immaculate houses is 55 m2 on 3 storeys, a timeless combination of grey stone, timber, terracotta and glass. The workmanship is thoughtful and  meticulous, the design simple but sophisticated, nothing to detracts from the beauty of the natural materials used. The attic bedroom with its plain walls and warm, sloped wooden ceiling is a pure delight.

On the next floor down a cool, chic sitting room, granite blocks, stained floors and shuttered windows; comfortable, but at the same time, stylish, and completed by a wood burning stove for the evenings when the temperature drops, though the house is heated should it get a little too cold outside. The tiled floors are heated, and there is electric central heating trough out the rooms also.

Equal thought has been given to kitchen design, the dark work surfaces an ideal contrast to the warm units, of which there are plenty, and the pale coloured walls. All fittings are of fine quality, well laid out, well lit, with the ceramic sink as  a perfect finishing touch. A neat Utility Room hides the equipment you need, but don’t really want to look at. The kitchen water tap has a individual and direct electric heating device.

A walk in shower room with double basins, tiled walls and floor and contemporary lighting wraps up the package nicely.

The second house, also of granite block and equally detailed renovation is 30 m2 and used as a Guest House. A good space for visiting family, but worth noting that the area is an up and coming Rural Tourist Venue so there are good Letting potential.

At 12 m2, the third habitable building, the fourth at 9 m2 is still a ruin, is currently a small hairdressing room, but could easily be converted into a workshop or further accommodation.

That smart driveway ends with ample parking, but the tranquil theme of shade and stone encircles the buildings. Cobbled paths, old steps and a shaded Avenue take you past Alliums, Roses and blue Hydrangeas nestled into weather beaten walls; paths which lead you to a bench and a view of the mountains at which you could  gaze at for hours.

Then there is water, 3 reservoirs, 2 springs and a Water Mine, irrigation for the many trees, Citrus, Quince, Persimmons and Olives. The long, hot summers will not be a problem for you and your guests either, a swim in one of those pools followed by a lazy lunch and a chilled afternoon cocktail will happily cool things down.

The Property is about two hours from Porto and around three from Lisbon. The coast is an easy drive; the small, but busy town of Arganil, where there are full facilities, takes just over 30 minutes.
