Property in central Portugal
Casa Mendes is a beautifully designed hillside property, modern, of good proportions, located in a small village community roughly halfway between Gois and Pampilosa da Serra.
Set in a quiet but not isolated position, this 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom house, with its basement garage, is south facing, has a large, landscaped garden and 360 degree mountain views that you’ll never tire of looking at. It’s an ideal spot for a rural home, holiday accommodation or a combination of the two.
The layout is well planned – the living and dining areas are light, spacious and airy, nothing about this house is cramped. Walls are plain, floors are tiled in warm colours and lighting is subtle; even the little things have been considered, for example, plenty of built in cupboard space for the belongings a family needs, but doesn’t want to sit and look at. There are wood burning stoves for winter heating.
All the bedrooms are of a useful size, one is en-suite, one gives access to the garden through french windows, the third is currently organised as a bed-sitting room; each is big enough to take a double bed or twin singles; the decor is simple, the floors are wooden and there are some built in closets.
The main bathroom is tiled and attractively fitted, with good storage for linen. Another, a shower room, is part of the Utility area on the lower ground floor.
The kitchen is a cook’s delight, lots of work surfaces, lots of good quality fitted cabinets – it’s tiled, decorated in soft colours and large enough to hold a breakfast table big enough to sit around in comfort.
One floor down the basement garage is an integral part of the building and will easily accommodate two vehicles +; alongside it is more, practical, storage space, including that third bathroom.
As well as the main balcony, with it’s superb views across the valley, there are paved walkways and terraces, plenty of shaded seating and, to the rear of the house, a cooking area fitted with BBQ and bread oven, outdoor living for the summer months. Once again there is more than enough space, nothing here is confined. Much of the sloping garden has been laid to fruit trees, but, if you wish to do so, there are a number of raised beds where you can grow soft fruit and vegetables, close by is the water supply you’ll need for irrigation.
The grounds are fenced, there are strong metal gates and the aluminium windows are shuttered.
Algares is a sleepy little place, but the requirements of modern life, banks, shops, cafes, can all be found close by. There are villages many festivals held over the summer; within easy reach are restaurants, cafes, a hotel – the River Beach at Pessegueiro, considered to be one of the best in the area, is only a few minutes drive; there is even an archaeological site with prehistoric cave drawings – around 2 hours from Porto and 3 from Lisbon, it’s an area well worth exploring, and it’s a house that’s well worth viewing.
