The Sado estuary displays various forms of contact between land and water, establishing the transition between the last “Extremadura” relief, the “Serra da Arrábida” and the “Alentejo” plains. The large formation includes a part of the river, marshes, mud and sand banks, salt marches – mostly disabled, beaches and coastal dunes, as well as mounted, pine forests and agricultural areas. The estuary is breeding grounds and wintering for numerous birds, including waders, and welcomes bottlenose dolphins – the only resident cetacean population in Portugal uses an estuary as feeding and breeding area, serving as maternity for many fish species. Despite the sparse population in important part of its edge, the Natural Reserve keeps numerous testimonies of human presence in the past – Roman ovens located in the Pine estate and the Phoenician trading post of Abul that can be added the Roman salting complex situated in the vicinity of Troia.
