Property in central Portugal
Quinta Nova
This agricultural Quinta, with its excellent ground, is a very productive little small holding. Located in a quiet spot close to the market town of Arganil, its 2 bedroom farmhouse stands in 2750m2 (just over half an acre/0.275 hectare) of land, with a number of outbuildings and a private Well from which water is pumped for irrigation. Additionally there is a stream close by.
The variety of current crops, including Maize (corn) potatoes, beans, brassicas and salad vegetables are an indication of the soil’s fertility, as are the selection of fruit trees – amongst which are peaches, pears, apples, figs and plums; you will also find Grape Vines.
Living accommodation, all at ground floor level, runs to 95m2 and consists of two good size bedrooms, a shower room with toilet and a large kitchen/living area, heated (in the cooler months) by a wood burning cooker and stove. Above is a large attic space, presently used for storage, but which, with its good external access, has possibilities for conversion to other uses.
To the front of the building is a large yard leading to a wood barn, a bread oven and a traditional alambique – the area used for distilling spirits, still to be found in many older country properties. There are also animal sheds, at the moment housing rabbits and hens.
The local town, a few moments drive, is a vibrant place with full services including schools, a medical centre a small hospital and a veterinary practice; shopping is good, as is the selection of cafes, bars and restaurants – a short walk from the main commercial district is a Leisure Centre with swimming pool and a cinema. Numerous events, cultural, musical, sporting, take place throughout the year and there is a choice of River Beaches close by with clean water and good swimming.
For anyone considering the provision of tourist accommodation, Portugal’s Central Region is becoming an increasingly popular destination; this district, which is well worth exploring, has excellent road access to Coimbra, with both main line rail links and fast coach service, the airports of Porto and Lisbon and the Atlantic Coast, renowned for its beaches and surfing. Further afield, the Spanish ferry ports of Santander and Bilbao are within a day’s drive.
